I am Shanna Barkume and I am new to Battle High School. I am a member of the Science department as a chemistry teacher. My path to Battle began at Kalamazoo College, in Kalamazoo, MI, where I fell in love of chemistry. After I graduated in 2006, I moved to Chicago and worked as a scientist at a petrochemical company. My desire to become a teacher grew over my two years in that position, so I decided to leave my position and become a teacher. I earned my Master’s of Art of Teaching at Dominican University. I taught for 5 years in Chicago Public Schools high before moving to Missouri in 2013. Last year, I taught biology and anatomy/physiology at Montgomery County HS. This year, I am very excited to teach chemistry and AP chemistry at Battle HS. The reason why I wanted to be a teacher is because I believe that education is the most powerful way a person can take control of their own destiny and change their life. I think education is the gateway to your dreams. I hope that I can help the students of Battle the same way my teachers helped me.
